Oral diseases, like gum disease, can attack your smile and alter your oral health. They can also affect the health of your entire body. For example, gum disease has been linked to a variety of different health issues, like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. So, it’s best to do all you can to prevent oral diseases. To help you do so, our dentist, Dr. Bertoglio, has some recommendations for you.

First, keep up on oral hygiene. This means you need to brush twice a day (with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste), floss once a day (with a flossing product of your choice), rinse once a day (with antibacterial mouthwash), and visit your dentist every six months. Doing these things can help you wash away the harmful bacteria that promote the development of oral diseases.

Second, have a healthy diet. This can help you have the nutrients necessary, like vitamins A and C, to prevent gum disease. So, do your best to eat more dairy, fruits, and vegetables, and avoid eating sugary and high-carbohydrate foods as much as possible.

Third, avoid tobacco. Tobacco is a dangerous substance that attacks the teeth and the gums. It alters the oral health, contributes to gum disease, increases your risk of having oral cancer, and even affects your entire health. It’s best to avoid using anything that has tobacco, like cigarettes, chewing tobacco, and cigars.
