Did you know that dental erosion is one of the key origins of cavities? This is because dental erosion, also known as enamel erosion, is the process in which harmful acids in your mouth slowly wear down the enamel on your teeth. Although your tooth enamel is a layer of protection, it is only a thin layer of protection and must be cared for at all times.

Did you know that acid reflux disease is a known risk factor for dental erosion? Acid reflux disease occurs when harmful stomach acids travel up your esophagus and into your mouth. This can cause dental erosion because they can slowly wear down your tooth enamel. However, if your mouth is producing enough saliva, you can help neutralize the acids and rinse away any food or acid particles in your mouth. To produce more saliva, try chewing sugarless gum after meals or eating crunchy foods with a high-water content.

Due to the importance of saliva in preventing dental erosion, it is important to avoid conditions such as dry mouth. Dry mouth occurs when there is a lack of saliva in your mouth and can be caused by numerous factors, including medications. If you should have any other issues with your oral health care in relation to dental erosion, visit your dentist.
